The Benefits of Cleaning Your Air Conditioning Unit

The Benefits of Cleaning Your Air Conditioning Unit

June 9, 2022

A clean air conditioner is fully capable of consistently and effectively keeping your home nice and comfy during the hot summer months. It will also be less of a stretch on your budget over the years when it is maintained well.

In fact, a clean cooling system comes with many appealing perks, which we highlight below, that contribute to better indoor comfort and peace of mind. We also offer tips on what you can do to keep your air conditioning unit clean.

The Benefits of Cleaning Your Air Conditioning Unit

An Extra Efficiency Boost

Spritzing your AC unit with water from a garden hose can help it operate more efficiently. In this case, hosing down the unit can remove debris and cool down the outside part of your AC system. Taking care of other key parts of your AC can also help improve overall efficiency. A more efficient air conditioning unit will save you money in the long run.

A Longer AC Lifespan

On average, a standard central cooling system lasts for about 15-20 years or so. However, you're more likely to get some extra life out of your AC if it's kept clean. Plus, if your AC is well-maintained, it's often easier to make minor repairs as necessary. In some situations, this can mean being able to affordably have repairs made rather than opting for a full replacement.

Consistent Indoor Comfort

It becomes increasingly difficult for your air conditioning unit to evenly distribute cool air throughout your home as gunk builds up over time. This could leave you with cold spots in certain areas of your home, or your AC may end up working harder than it has to achieve the preferred temperature.

How to Clean Your AC Unit

A general rule of thumb to follow with cleaning your AC unit is to take smaller steps at least once a month when regularly using it. A more thorough cleaning can be beneficial if done before and after the warmer months of the year.

One of the steps you can take to clean your air conditioning system is to hose off the outside unit. Keep the water pressure on the lighter or mid-level side, and you should be good to go. While you're cleaning off the condenser, also spritz the fins. A soft brush can also be used to clean the fins if dust and debris need to be removed. Another step you can take while cleaning the outside unit is to remove the fan before applying moderate water pressure to the fins for a more thorough cleaning. Additionally, with AC cleaning, we recommend taking the following steps:

  • Cleaning the evaporator coils.
  • Changing the filter every 60-90 days.
  • Check your thermostat to make sure the settings are correct.
  • Cleaning up around your outside unit, especially in the fall when leaves can land on your unit.

  • Didn’t Push a Furnace Replacement
    Taylor D.
Tom, the owner was awesome. He came out immediately when our furnace went out and completed a challenging fix. When I asked if I should replace the furnace he said no. Honest and did outstanding work. Furnace is quieter and seems to be running better than when we moved in!
  • Highly Recommended for AC Replacement
    Jeremiah D.
Tom came over and thoroughly discussed my options. We discussed at length the pros and cons of the most expensive and least expensive options, and came up with a fair price for the products I chose. The crew showed up on time and finished the same day, and was easy to deal with. The new furnace heats my house so much better than the old one. I would definitely use Master Mechanical again. And I have. I’ve now replaced multiple furnaces and AC units using Tom and his crew at Master Mechanical, and would use them again.
  • Quick AC Fix During a Power Surge
    Jim P.
Master Mechanical responded quickly when our AC failed following a power surge. They quickly diagnosed the problem, and responded patiently to my uninformed consumer questions. Once the team arrived to complete the repair work, they were professional and again, knowledgeable. Prices were fair, and they followed up with me after work was completed. Overall a great company!
  • Last Minute AC Repair

  • Two Great HVAC Experiences
    Bill L.
Did an excellent job on two repairs. The first was an emergency call for a furnace repair when it was 4 degrees F outside. They showed up on time, diagnosed the problem, went for parts, repaired the furnace all in about an hours time. The second repair was for the whole house humidifier attached to the furnace. It was a minor issue and corrected in less than 40 minutes. Everything is working great. My experience with their work is excellent.
