2025 Heat Pump Updates

2025 Heat Pump Updates | Latest Innovations & Efficiency

March 13, 2025

Using a heat pump is an efficient way to heat and cool your home. They are a more sustainable HVAC system that transfers heat in and out of your home. This is different from a typical furnace, which generates heat from fuel.

Heat pumps offer combined functionality in one system, and the 2025 heat pump updates will make them even more efficient and sustainable.

Heat Pump: How to Defrost It During Winter

New Heat Pump Technology

Updates to heat pump technology and features improve their operation and performance.

Variable Speed Compressors

Older heat pumps had single-speed compressors, but recent innovations have introduced variable-speed compressors. These new compressors can adjust their speed instead of cycling on and off, increasing energy efficiency and reducing the wear and tear on the system.

Cold-Climate Heat Pumps

One of the new advancements is focused on developing cold-climate heat pumps that can operate in much colder temperatures. Another one of the innovations is in dual-fuel heat pumps. These combine the use of electricity and gas, which allows for increased heating and lower energy costs. Newer heat pumps also have improved defrost systems to remove the ice, which can affect the system's efficiency.

Smart Home Compatibility

Adding smart feature capabilities is a much-needed heat pump improvement in this day and age. Heat pumps that connect to smart thermostats allow homeowners to set schedules and routines, control the system remotely, and receive alerts about maintenance needs or issues.

New Heat Pump Refrigerants

At the beginning of 2025, the EPA banned the manufacturing and importing of R-410A in favor of HVAC refrigerants with lower global warming potential (GWP). The new options, R454B and R-32, have lower GWPs and are more environmentally friendly, emitting fewer greenhouse gases. Any residential or commercial heat pump system installed in 2025 will use the new refrigerants.

While the price of installing a new heat pump will increase, this switch makes already efficient heat pumps an even more sustainable option for your property, saving you money in the long run.

2025 Heat Pump Incentives

Replacing your system is your only option since heat pumps cannot be retrofitted to use the new refrigerants. Luckily, when it comes time to install a new heat pump for your property, homeowners can take advantage of several incentives and credits.

Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit

As part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, homeowners get a 30% tax credit for installation costs of the highest efficiency products, up to $2000. The 2025 update gives homeowners a 30% tax credit when purchasing eligible energy-efficient heat pumps, up to $2000 annually. This tax credit is only for primary residences and Energy Star® certified systems. Homeowners also need a PIN number when they file their taxes.

Geothermal Heat Pump Credit

The same law offers a 30% tax credit on installing an Energy Star® certified system for geothermal heat pumps. This tax credit can be used for primary and secondary homes. The percentage of the credit will drop to 26% in 2033 and 22% in 2034, giving homeowners a larger incentive to install a ground source heat pump sooner rather than later.

Income-Based Heat Pump Rebate

You can get a rebate of up to $8000 through the High-Efficiency Home Rebate Program for installing energy-efficient systems in your home. This includes but is not limited to heat pumps. In order to qualify, you must have a household income of 150% of the median income for your area or less. This rebate can be combined with other tax credits, allowing homeowners to get more for their money when doing this pricey HVAC upgrade.

  • Didn’t Push a Furnace Replacement
    Taylor D.
Tom, the owner was awesome. He came out immediately when our furnace went out and completed a challenging fix. When I asked if I should replace the furnace he said no. Honest and did outstanding work. Furnace is quieter and seems to be running better than when we moved in!
  • Highly Recommended for AC Replacement
    Jeremiah D.
Tom came over and thoroughly discussed my options. We discussed at length the pros and cons of the most expensive and least expensive options, and came up with a fair price for the products I chose. The crew showed up on time and finished the same day, and was easy to deal with. The new furnace heats my house so much better than the old one. I would definitely use Master Mechanical again. And I have. I’ve now replaced multiple furnaces and AC units using Tom and his crew at Master Mechanical, and would use them again.
  • Quick AC Fix During a Power Surge
    Jim P.
Master Mechanical responded quickly when our AC failed following a power surge. They quickly diagnosed the problem, and responded patiently to my uninformed consumer questions. Once the team arrived to complete the repair work, they were professional and again, knowledgeable. Prices were fair, and they followed up with me after work was completed. Overall a great company!
  • Last Minute AC Repair

  • Two Great HVAC Experiences
    Bill L.
Did an excellent job on two repairs. The first was an emergency call for a furnace repair when it was 4 degrees F outside. They showed up on time, diagnosed the problem, went for parts, repaired the furnace all in about an hours time. The second repair was for the whole house humidifier attached to the furnace. It was a minor issue and corrected in less than 40 minutes. Everything is working great. My experience with their work is excellent.
